I'm sure you have heard about the app Periscope by now. I'm also sure you have asked yourself how to use Periscope. What is Periscope? It's owned by Twitter and has gained a lot of momentum in a very short time. It offers free broadcast from your phone to potentially all Twitter members worldwide. You can comment a scope and give hearts to the person scoping.
Periscope has many benefits, but does it mean that you should start using it? Well. It depends how you are promoting yourself and your business on a regular basis.
1. It´s realtime. This means that I and all my followers must be online at the same time to have the Periscope experience. Today, with most of my team members in the same time zone, I find it difficult to gather them online at the same time. Some work late, som early and hopefully they are busy building their business.
On the same note it means that I have to bring value to them in realtime, instead of inbetween all my other activities.
Right now I´m producing this blog post on the train because I'm free to do it.
When I produce written content, I can do it while the kids run around and make noice and in higher degree be available for them immediately. I would not be able to have two three minutes with the kids during a Periscope session.
Do you struggle with time to take courses and training? In this blogpost i explain how I consume content.
2. Dependent on the mobile network
Mobile networks are getting better, but in a country like Norway we still have a lot of places with limited og poor data speed. I don´t want to start a Periscope and risk being disconnected. I'm sure you have seen the “Trying to reconnect” message in Periscope…..
I have a data bundle of 1GB on my phone paid by my daytime employer. Some months I consume all of it. Starting Periscope actively will consume more data when I'm not using my WiFi at home. My team members will also be out roaming and face the same issue of consuming their data bundle.
3. My content expires
I want my content to be kept forever. Therefore I focus on creating content for my blog. I know we have services like Katch saving your scopes, but for me it means that I have to educate my target market on one more tech thing. When I publish content to my blog it stays there forever and I don't have to introduce any complexity.
Why not do Periscope AND your blog, you might ask? Well, I don´t have unlimited time and currently I find that I have more to gain to put my efforts into producing content for my blog.
4. Technology is a barrier
All my teammembers are on Facebook. Only a handful is on Twitter. This may be the nature of the business I´m involved in where I have a lot of grown ups in my team. They prefer to meet personally or to receive content on the platforms they are already comfortable with.
I still find that some have “dumb” phones as well and are not familiar with the app ecosystem. I could send them training videos, but I know that it will require that I spend time on training them.
To connect with my team in the best possible way, I use most of my time creating value on my private Facebook group.
5. Limited functionality
When I manage to gather all of my teammembers at the same time online, I want to show them a company presentation, our company´s website, interact with messages etc. That´s why I prefer to use the AnyMeeting webinar platform instead of Periscope. Would you like to become successful doing webinars?
The nature of your business and your team may be the opposite of why I don´t use Periscope to build my business.
My most important advice for you is that you prioritize your time where you get the most in return.
