Not long time ago we used to take a degree, find a job, most likely the same place your dad had worked all his life, work there for 40 years and then retire with a secure pension for the family. You may think that this is how it was in the stone age, but it´s only two generations ago that this was normal. If you have not yet fully understood the labor market trends, you are in a hurry because you will be stuck and miserable if you don't
How did we get there?
It started to change with our last generation. People started to switch career every 6 years. Some moved up, some sideways and some even downwards. They were less focused on a stable retirement, but hopefully they had something to retire with. They knew that their choices along the way would bring less pension and less security.
What labor market trends do we see?
Most of it has changes. People still think they are 40 years back. They have not accepted the new way of working.
Globalisation means that what was previously done by people locally, now can be done by people in India where cost of labor is much lower. More and more work are automated and people are replaced by robots.
Unlike before, you will no longer be paid based on your degree, seniority or who you know.
Today you are paid based on your (not your team´s or company´s) performance. You see this happening in every sector of the world. Cleaners will no longer have a fixed salary. They will be paid per room they clean that is approved by their manager. You will never be paid to hang around.
Do you know any employees who are not working at their full effort all the time at your workplace?
Yes, exactly, and don´t you think the board of directors know that when they are looking at how to increase the company´s profit?
High performer employees must also be good at politics”
You may be a person that put work ethics high, and decide that you will do your best at work. Then you need to understand and be prepared for something that you may not have thought of….
When you decide to be a performer at work, you will be a threath to your fellow co-workers. You will become a target for your co-workers. They will try to pull you down so they don´t look bad, compared to you, for their management. You may also find that some of your co-workers also decided to be top performers, and now you have become a threath to their plans to be promoted.
You have also become a target for your manager, because he doesn´t want you to take his position. In a traditional business there will always be fewer positions on the top of the company than further down in the organization.
You are now in an environment where you will need to be good at politics to survive at work……
What are your options?
Not many. You can be quiet in meetings, not engage in the coffee machine conversations, not say much at all and just go back to your desk after lunch and meetings to avoid showing that you have decided to be a top performer.
This is the work life of many top performers, who have understood the labor market trends, in the corporate world today.
If you are involved in network marketing this shift will not be a big challenge for you. You will already be used to working in a performance based economy.
Unlike in the traditional corporate market, there are no limit on how many new leaders that you can create and if you decide to become a leader, it will ONLY be up to you if you make it or not.
If you find it challenging to adopt to these labor market challenges, I can relate to that. This is exactly what was my challenge a few years ago. I knew I had to change, but I did not know where to go and how to get there.
You may think that you cannot make this shift, but trust me, you can!
You can start now or you can start later – the most important thing for you is that you decide to start.
